This server is too old to bother with - you could get as much power by running a VM on your home computer - but ...

Yes, you need drivers. We need to know which controller you have. If you have a SCSI drive, you likely have the PERC 4e/Si. If you are using a PERC 4/DC or 4/SC, you can only use 2003/2008. Anything newer than Windows 7 / 2008 R2 is NOT compatible with this RAID controller, so you can only use a maximum of Server 2008 R2. You will need to use an old Linux kernel on this machine too. Check the support site for actual supported linux distros.

You can confirm your RAID controller, by going into the configuration utility during POST: CTRL-M if it is a PERC, and you can find the model in there. It you don't have a CTRL-M OR there are no physical or logical drives listed in there, then you are using something else. If you have a CERC (not PERC), then everything is different.

Server 2008 R2: https://dl.dell.com/scsi-raid/LSI-LOGIC_MULTI-DEVICE_A00_R227150.exe (they are no longer included in the OS)
Server 2008 drivers should be built into the OS.
Server 2003 drivers: https://dl.dell.com/scsi-raid/perc-w2k3-6.46.3.64-A01.exe

Which windows operating system are you trying to install? PowerEdge 1850 is ver old model and latest operating system are not supported and there will not be any driver for latest operating system for 1850. I believe 1850 only support Windows 2003 and 2008 operating system.

I'm with Shine on this verbatim. It is a 16-year-old model, it would also take up a lot of electricity to run. And we need to know the OS you're on. If you are using a RAID Controller, it has to be configured RAID 0. (You must need the configuration not just plugging in an HDD)

Thanks. Tried a few including windows 7,8.1 and 10. I have keys for 2003 and 2008. When the installer gets to the hard disk selection it is blank.

Also tried debian but it doesnt run and get a flickering screen.

Do i need to get a driver for the hdd?

Thanks. I know it is old but it is for studying.

What i found is go into bios devices and set the raid to just scsi.

I can then install Puppy Linux without any issue. It does take 64bit. I can't get mint or later versions to run. I get screen refresh issues
