We have an odd issue... I cannot get support due to warrant out of date but the Dell documentation of the disks is wrong and they still won't allow me to speak with anyeone. The Dell support reps claim that this device has 500GB drives 3.5inch in the secondary RAID 5 3 disk array. We ordered the "Exact" part number of j317f as well as we were told to order 86ymw and 400-afpz - none of these appear to be right as the disks in the server and the carrier are not even the same size they appear to be 2.5inch drives as well as they are the new type "gold and black colored not all black". Support will not let us speak with an engineer without a basically $300 charge yet they have the drives documented wrong and we are out of warranty. Can any of the engineers suggest a solution.
Note: I have not removed the drive to physically check it as I didn't want to risk removing it until I actually have a disk to replace it.
Thanks.

So, does it have 3.5" drives in the RAID 5? Are they SAS or SATA?
If so, don't worry about contacting Support and don't fret over the model numbers:

As long as they are certified Dell drives, and at least as large as the drives they replace, they'll work fine.

Those are the carriers it has for sure.... not the all black one's.
As well the other problem is the drives are labeled 600GB (on the carrier not the disk itself) and I am not totally sure about the size due to not removing the disk yet but if the carrier is different then likely that is why it looks so odd.
The RAID volume itself is 1TB (3 disks at 500) almost exactly so that doesn't lend to them being 600GB disks but they are labeled that.
Thanks alot for your help - if you have thoughts on this information please let me know.

Also I feel that I am not going to be sure unless I pull the disk and check because the 600GB version is SAS I cannot even find a SATA that is 600GB..... is it safe to pull it and just it out until the replacement arrives? - well assuming the other disks don't fail.
Thanks.

600GB is SAS.
3x500GB RAID 5 will be 2x466GB = 932GB
3x600GB RAID 5 will be 2x559GB = 1118GB
Neither of these are "almost exactly" 1TB (right?). This is referring to the DISK size, not the partition size. Check Disk Management for the size of the actual "disk".
Check OMSA for the details of individual disks. Otherwise, the safer way to physically check the disks is to shutdown the server and take one out, rather than risking data loss and corruption by removing it hot.
What OS do you have?
