Problem Installing OS to SCSI Hard Drive

I decided to take out one of the hard drives purchased in my poweredge server to use in another macine.

I have a fully functioning LSI5C31010 U160 LSI SCSI Adapter card. I know this because I use it daily with an IBM 36Z15 SCSI Hard drive in our labs.

Here is my problem. I have a new SCSI hard drive. A 73GB Fujitsu MAP3735NP I purchased from Dell, which I am trying to load either Windows XP or 2000 onto but have been getting problems. This may get long..

With the drive set to ID0 (no pins on the underside) the SCSI scan begins and hangs at ID0, HD1. I get around this by enabling the HD termination.

It then spins up the drive at the scsi bios and seems to go fine. The SCSI scan will hand if the drive is spinning at the time of the scan.

When trying to install Windows 2000 I get the message - "Disk I/o error: status 0000BB01" - Failed to Arcread the boot partition to check for signature.

Sometimes the error message changes to 00002001.

When trying to install windows XP all goes well until it gets to choosing a HD for installation. It says Examining 0mb, Disk 0, at ID0 on bus 0 on sym_3.."

Then it says it can’t install there because it can’t read it.

It see's the drive but can't do anything to it, write protect is not enabled on the drive.

I have been able to format and verify the hard drive throught the scsi bios. The hard drive is brand new and was replaced once already as we thought the problem might be due to a fualy drive.

Also – on the scsi bios menu under SYNC it says ‘no’ where my other scsi drive says ‘160.0’. Could this be the problem? How could I enable it?

I can find very little on the subject of arcread using google.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I have the same problem. I tried three different SCSI disks in PowerEdge 2300, they passed internal CTRL-A tests "verify disk" but when I boot from the CD and try to perform a W2K installation, following happens:

1. Bootable CD is discovered
2. Error msg appears "Disk I/O Error: status 00002000 (on the second line below) Failed to ArcRead the boot partition to check for a signature.
3. There pops up a third line from Windows 2000 Bootstrap installation and the "blue environment" installation of Windows 2000 starts.
4. It detects PERC but at the very end says it could not discover any harddrive attached to the computer.

so, i tried to unplug backplane disks and just for the fun of it I plugged 68pin SCSI disk from PE1300 directly to the cable and interface leading to SCSI controller on the board. The cable was plugged from PE1300, there are "plugs/interfaces" and also a terminator. One end was plugged to SCSI board controller, second to the disk. Guess what.. the same error message. All the disks are fine.

Any idea from Dell msg board people would be highly appreciated.
