R730xd. SSDs reset - why?

Hi,

I have 10 R730xd servers with 16 SSDs in each. This weekend 4 of them have shown in the iDRAC Storage Event Log that several drives have been reset.

Why is this, and should I worry about them being about to fail? I already had 2 of these new LITEON drives crash on me.

System 1:
2015-03-01T18:48:54+0100    Disk 5 in Backplane 1 of Integrated RAID Controller 1 was reset.

System 2:
2015-03-01T12:54:53+0100    Disk 5 in Backplane 1 of Integrated RAID Controller 1 was reset.

System 3:
2015-03-01T19:30:17+0100    Disk 13 in Backplane 1 of RAID Controller in Slot 3 was reset.
2015-02-28T16:59:22+0100    Disk 6 in Backplane 1 of Integrated RAID Controller 1 was reset.
2015-02-28T08:05:23+0100    Disk 5 in Backplane 1 of Integrated RAID Controller 1 was reset.

System 4:
015-03-01T10:54:49+0100    Disk 18 in Backplane 1 of RAID Controller in Slot 3 was reset.

The megacli commands shows an error count of 1 under "Other Error Count".

/usr/sbin/megacli -PDList -aALL -NoLog
Media Error Count: 0
Other Error Count: 1
Predictive Failure Count: 0
Last Predictive Failure Event Seq Number: 0

PCore,

The first thing I would look at is if the BIOS, Drac, or raid controller is out of date. If you would could you let me know what you have installed, as well as the current firmware versions? I will be able to provide you with the links you may need to update, or a resolution to the problem.

Let me know.

Hi Chris,

Pcore,

The server seems to be out of date accross the board.

The latest versions are;

BIOS 1.1.4 - http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=NM3Y2

Firmware -

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

iDrac with LCC - http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=T387W

Perc H730P firmware - http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=591VT

Run those updates in order and then let me know if the "resets" cease.

Let me know.

According to Dell ProSupport there is a problem across Europe with these new LITEON SSDs.

A firmware update should be released soon which will hopefully resolve the problem.

I can confirm that Dell said so around 2015-2016 about the FW to SAS SSD from LiteOn - i didn't trust it and LiteOn didn't confirm those failures in older FW in their disks.

More interestingly more important was an upgrade to the SAS enclosure/enumerator which (previously to being developed) caused an overwrite/reset on first disks in the enclosure disks in the instant of physically removing failed LiteOn SAS disk. It was very awful to loose a working raid1 volume with an OS while switching SSDs.

If anybody's wondering how did i reach this old thread i can explain that i am looking for information regarding R730XD and possible U.2/NVMe disk usage /requirements in the 13th gen. of servers.
