Raid 5, drive issues, when to run consistency check?

I have a theoretical question, that I've come up against a few times.   If a configuration such as a perc4di on a poweredge 2600 with raid 5 starts to show errors on one of the drives, but the drive hasn't automatically offlined itself, when should  and when shouldn't a person run a consistency check before swapping out the bad drive?

Does it always help?  Can it hurt the raid?  Could running a consistency check cause or prevent a punctured stripe.

It doesn't always help. I can't hurt the RAID, but it can expose problems that were already there that weren't yet exposed. It won't cause a puncture, but it may expose it, and running it regularly it can prevent it in some cases (it will never fix a puncture, so running it when there is a problem is too late - it is meant only for preventative maintenance).

Thanks.  I do run consistency checks monthly as part of server checkups.

So is it advisable to always running a consistency check if possible before swapping out a bad drive?
