Recover data from non-raid SAS drive

My SAS controller went bad on my lab computer. I have two sas drives that were not in a raid that have some important data ((I know....). I attached the drives to an old server in the shop but I can't import the config or or the disks. Is it safe to clear the foreign config and try to import the disks or will I lose my data? Do I have any other good options?

SAS5/ir and PERC5/I are not the same controller. The PERC5/I does not support non raid drives. Clearing the foreign will not allow you to import the configuration. You are going to need a replacement sas5/ir.

Clearing the config will make the drives present as ready. What controller model was the original controller and what is the model of the replacement? If they are the same the best option would be to import the configuration and the drives should be accessible then.

The original controller is Dell

UCS-51, GU186, UN939 SAS 5i SAS5/iR

Replacement is perc 5i as well.... It wont import the config though. Maybe because they are non raid?

So you think I can just clear the foriegn config and try to import the drives?

Thanks! So, you are saying that is basically my only option, or at least the best by far..?

It is the only option that has a high chance of having you recover data, getting the drives working on the perc5/I would be data destructive. You may also be able to use a sas6/ir but matching the controller is the best option.
