SAS-6/ir Raid 1 - failed drive, how to replace?

Hello,

I have a Dell PowerEdge T105 with a SAS-6/ir controller.  Had two 500GB drives in a RAID 1 array but one drive failed (physical failure).

I'd like to replace, I have another drive of the same capacity and type, but what's the best/safest way to replace?

I was assuming I'd boot into the RAID controller BIOS, look for the disk, add it to the mirror as a second disk, and let it sync, but wasn't sure how the controller would handle this new drive.

Thanks!

Note that I would like to add the drive to the array through the Windows GUI if possible, I'll be performing at a client office after hours, and wont have easy access back to the site if I leave while it's rebuilding from the BIOS or boot sequence.  But if doing it via the BIOS is the best way, I'll do that too.

Power down, replace the drive, power up and boot to Windows.  Open Dell OpenManage Server Administrator, Storage, SAS 6/iR, Virtual Disks ... should show resynching/rebuilding percentage/progress.  If it is not already rebuilding, then from the dropdown menu, choose Assign Hot-Spare, and assign the new drive as a hot-spare to begin the rebuild.

Hi Robert,

controlser is SAS 6/ir, the driva was failed it did  not show it in diagnostics and there was a nois from failing disk, other disk was WD from poweredge r210 server 500gb disk, on that server (r210) i have deleted raid configurations so i think that there is no foreign configuration on it,

what worry me i dont see new disk in server anywhere i see working disk but i dont see new disk (i have powered down server connect it and power on server when connecting new disk is this ok)

today i have installed OMSA to see config from operating system, and no new disk i cant find it, i have menu for configuring dedicated hot spare and global hot spare, do i have to do some modifications there and if yes how i cant find decent instructions for adding disk and rebuilding raid?

thank you

looks like even first disk has errors moments ago server had unexpected shutdown, and still shows disk errors in event viewer

The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block.

Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.
