The controller for the system board is SATA only. SAS drives will not work in the R220 unless you install and attach them to a hardware RAID controller.

A friend of mine said that it should work but will still have SATA features not the SAS advantages.
No, SAS controllers are generally backward compatible with SATA drives, but SAS drives are not backward compatible with SATA controllers. There may be a drive SAS drive somewhere that is able to operate on either SAS or SATA, but I'm not aware of one and there is not one supported on the R220.
