Slots 4 and 5 are swapped on a C6220. Pulling Slot4 make s5 go missing.

When we pulled the drive from SLOT 5 the controller shows that SLOT 4 is missing .

The vise-versa is true when pulling SLOT 4.

When the drive is reinserted it's swapped counterpart will reappear in the list of available drives.

The same is NOT true for SLOT 0,1,2 or 3

The has been experienced maybe 4 times so far.  I can only account for 3 of the 4 occurrences.

On our test machine, we have performed the following tests.

  • Light up test:  Lit up drives 0-5 using MegaCli.  All drives lit up correctly.
  • Pull SLOTS 0-3: The controller detected the correct drive was removed from the chassis
  • Check Sata Cables: Cables were correctly routed from the RAID controller to the Main Board.
  • Replace RAID Controller:  Did not resolve the issue.
  • Replace Backplane: TBD
  • Replace Main Board: TBD

THEORY:

We noticed that the "Connected Port" value and "Slot Number" value were swapped for PORTS 4 and 5.  This could be a clue so we investigated.

On the same server,  SLOT 1 and 2 are swapped, and Slot 3 and 0 are swapped.

After testing we found the theory failed.  "Connected Port" and "Slot Number" do not correlate for these slots.

FACTS:

Our farm runs only linux and has around 300 of these servers.

QUESTIONS:

Has anyone else experienced this?

Why does lighting up the drives work correctly? eg. lit up s5 and 5 lights up.

Is there a backplane firmware?

What else can i test or check, prior to replacing the Backplane and Main Board?

Should i look for anything peculiar in the logs?

Hi,

Do you have 1U or 2U sleds? If you swap the motherboard connector for 4 and 5 does it work correctly?

Thanks for the response..  This is a 2U unit with the 24 drive backplane.  I'm having our DC techs perform the test you mentioned and awaiting the results.  I'm also going to request they test one of the other nodes in the chassis.

Finally got some time from a DC Tech, they had loaded racks to install all over the world.

So the backplane is not wired up with individual sata cables for each drive. There are 4 cables going to the backplane one for each sled.

We were able to figure out the source of the problem, with help from Dell.

Tthe sata cable bundle for slot 4 and 5 within the sled have their stickers reversed and therefore the cables were installed reversed during assembly.

The issue was resolved in manufacturing starting May 2014.

The part in question is part# FK3W2

The fix is part# YTHX7

This would only impact the c6220 II systems built prior to May 2014.
