I've tried a 5302 in a PE2800, and have the same results as you. The controller BIOS activates at startup, I can see/create/modify logical drives, but the PowerEdge won't use the controller as a boot device. It even isn't listed in the server BIOS as a bootable device.
So far, I haven't been able to get any 3rd party controller working in the PE2800, including an LSI 320-2E, which is identical to Dell's own PERC4e/DC.
I have about 5 of these PE2800's i'm about ready to return under my 30 day satisfaction guarantee, since they seem to be wired to use only Dell parts. I can't even install a 5.25" tape drive in the unit because Dell does not supply or sell the guide rails and there are no power connectors in the 2800. They make you buy a cable assy!!
