You can increase the memory in the server, but this is dependent on how many CPUS's are installed, as well as what Memory Operating Mode is configured to in the BIOS.
If you are running a single processor, then you can only go to 96GB, where with 2 processors you can max out at 288GB.
So if you have dual processors, with adding dimms your next jump would be going to 8 dimms for 128GB.
These examples are on the basis you are in Optimizer Mode in the BIOS.
If I replace the memory with dual rank can I use all 9 slots and achieve the 144GB?
I was looking at this memory. Dell 16 GB Certified Replacement Memory Module for Select Dell Systems - 2Rx4 RDIMM 1333MHz LV
My uncertainty is that the Dell document indicates you can't have greater than 800MHz when using 3 dual rank and its for testing only. If I read the chart correctly, I can't utilize this scenarios either and my only option is to add a CPU. Am I correct?

Thanks for the information, there is only 1 CPU, I will have to add a CPU in order increase the memory.

Not at all. You can add 3 additional on the single side to max at 144Gb. It would be 288GB if you maxed both.

I thought with quad rank dimm you can't use the third dimm slot?

Yes you could, the limitation is specifically based on the quad ranked dimms. So you would be able to fully populate the bank using the dual ranks.
