Upgrade R740 with software RAID

Question

Hi,   I have a server with the following config: PowerEdge R740 Server Intel Xeon Gold 6240 2.6G, 18C/36T, 10.4GT/s, 24.75M Cache, Turbo, HT (150W) DDR4-2933 Chassis with up to 8 x 3.5' SAS/SATA Hard Drives for Software RAID,1-CPU PowerEdge 2U Standard Bezel Riser Config 1, 4 x8 slots 4X64GB RDIMM, 2933MT/s, Dual Rank iDRAC9,Enterprise 1.92TB SSD SATA Mix Use 6Gbps 512 2.5in Hot-plug AG Drive,3.5in HYB CARR 4X8TB 7.2K RPM SATA 6Gbps 512e 3.5in Hot-plug Hard Drive BOSS controller card + with 2 M.2 Sticks 240G (RAID 1),FH Dual, Hot-plug, Redundant Power Supply (1+1), 750W 2XC13 to C14, PDU Style, 10 AMP, 6.5 Feet (2m), Power Cord Intel X550 Quad Port 10GbE BASE-T, rNDC ( Intel X550 Dual Port 10GbE BASE-T Adapter, PCIe Full Height Intel X550 Dual Port 10GbE BASE-T Adapter, PCIe Low Profile ReadyRails Sliding Rails With Cable Management Arm ProSupport Next Business Day Onsite Service Extension, 24 Month(s) ( ProSupport Next Business Day Onsite Service Initial, 12 Month(s)    I'm interested in upgrading the hardware so it will include a Hardware SAS HBA in order to make it VSAN-compatible. I guess I will need a suitable cable on top of the HBA330 SAS mini-mono (HBA330 12Gbps SAS HBA Controller (NON-RAID), Minicard,CK - [405-AAJW]) I came across two 'candidate cables' : 1.  Assembly,Cable,BP3.5X8,MPERC,3M,R740 - [GTKVF] 2. Assembly,Cable,BP3.5X8,MPERC,APL,R740 – [5W93G]   My question is which of the cables is suitable for the upgrade (and for future use, it would be nice if someone can tell me what is the difference between 3M and APL cables) , and ofc whether this upgrade won't void the warranty of the server   David

And one more thing regarding the Backplane. Please correct me if I'm wrong but you get the same BP (factory -preinstalled) regardless whether you ordered the server with software raid or with PERC, right?

Hi, as i know all Software raid backplanes works with PERC but there are backplanes(24x 2.5) that works only with PERC. But this you get also explained during requesting an offer. Regards Martin

If you order all parts from Dell direct it should be no Problem.

Ways to order are contacting your Sales Rep. or calling Tech Support for the Upgrade both Departments offer you the qualification for the right parts, too.
