Warning: Embedded RAID firmware is not present message on PowerEdge 2850
When I boot this server, I get the message: Warning: Embedded RAID firmware is not present.
I type in the service tag number { {SVC TAG REMOVED BY MODERATOR}} and go to the list of drivers. There are 6 items to choose from in the SCSI RAID area. 3 are firmware.
(1) How do I determine which PERC I have so I know which of the 3 to download?
(2) Once I decide what file to download, what do I do with it? (I have a floppy drive, usb, & cdrom). Do I just copy the file as-is (they are .exe) onto some media or execute it & direct the output to the media. (Some instruction manual would really be useful !!!)
(3) How do I get the system to prompt me to install the RAID firmware? I see buttons that say download & install next to the firmware files, but I'd rather use local media.
By changing the BIOS from RAID to SCSI, I was able to install windows 2003 server and get the server to boot, but I need to implement RAID. If anyone knows a link to detailed instructions for installing RAID firmware, that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

3rdParty,
In regards to the error, please shut down the server and remove the battery, then remove and reseat the dimm, reinstall the battery. Battery MUST be removed before reseating the raid dimm, or it will damage the dimm .
The server has a Perc 4e/di installed.
Here is the driver and firmware links you need, I am assuming you have Windows 2003, if not let me know and I will get the correct links.
Driver- www.dell.com/.../DriverDetails
Firmware - www.dell.com/.../DriverDetails
These are designed to be launched from within the OS.
Let me know how it goes.

If Chris' suggestion does not work, then remove/reseat the entire riser board (has the expansion slots on it as well as the RAID chip) and the RAID Key (small 1-inch blue slot by the system memory).

Thanks for your quick responses Chris H & theflash1932. I will follow your suggestions & let you know what happens.
I appreciate you telling me what PERC I have, but how does one tell which version is there (for future installations)? Is the information somewhere in the component list or one of the installation utilities? I searched for that information, but can't seem to locate it.
And is there some Dell manual or documentation that explains all those steps? It certainly isn't intuitive!
Thanks again.

While most of this is basic hardware troubleshooting (such as removing power to memory DIMM's before removing/installing), most of the steps and information can be found in the manuals:

Onboard RAID (ROMB) Components:

Some undocumented fixes and procedures - tips and tricks - come from a LOT of experience and knowledge of general and specific "best practices".
You can discover the RAID controller model on any system in several ways ... 1) your order details will include the model, 2) during POST, you will see a prompt for the setup utility for the controller - entering that utility will usually tell you exactly which model, as will the prompt screen for entering the utility, 3) it can be obtained from the OS (if bootable) often in Device Manager but always in OpenManage (management software).
