Why does no Dell RAID controller support nvme drives?

Hello,

Why does no Dell RAID controller support nvme drives?

How to create hardware RAID with nvme drives in Dell servers?

Hello maa11,

NVMe drives are controlled by software controller  i.e.  S140

To set up RAID you'll need to configure the BIOS

Page 52:  https://dell.to/2PBHw9g

SATA Setting: Embedded SATA to RAID mode

NVMe Settings RAID

Boot mode UEFI

Please let me know how it goes.

Maybe you do not understand my question.

How to create hardware RAID with nvme drives in Dell servers?

(only hardware raid supported by ESXi)

Hello maa11,

NVMe are PCI drives and not connected to the HW raid controller.  They can be used, but not part of the array.

This could help -Installing or upgrading NVMe PCIe SSD driver for Vmware : https://dell.to/3isY8fW

As I understood, this is just to make the NVME visible (and it is usually visible), not to make a RAID.

Hi,

H/W RAID does not support  NVME.
S140 does.

Do you have any plans to release hardware RAID controllers with NVMe support?

Hello @maa11,

I am sorry, I don't know about specific plans to release hardware RAID controllers with NVMe support. It may or not happen in the future depending on the market evolution and customer needs.

For sure if NVMe continues being a tendency on the market more and more solutions involving this kind of storage system will be released.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

I want to know if T40 will support raid on two nvme pcie drives (the drives are Samsung evo plus 970 and M. 2 adapters from StarTech), thanks.

6 months later ... Same question: HW RAID using NVMe PCIe SSDs.

Possible options? Updates? Other ideas? Experience from the field?
My configuration includes R840/PERC H740P.

Thanks for the prompt reply!

The question is about NVMe PCIe HW RAID support. Nothing more, nothing less.

I know well that NVMe PCIe is supported - and even have one PM1725a installed. The point is that I can not install the second SSD and configure a HW RAID, e.g. RAID1.

X88,

The R840 as well as the H740p support Nvme drives, but under certain configurations, as shown in the manual here

Let me know if this helps..

Hi,

Curious, where did you install the PM1725a, does H740p detects it?

Probably you can look into Dell BOSS card: https://dell.to/3xdh22z

H755N controller from PERC 11 family support RAID with NVMe drives. Please note H755N is supported on latest servers with specific backplanes.

Well, the chassis backplane configuration is 12/12.

The 1725a is currently installed in Slot 23. iDRAC sees it as well as Win Server.
