The "in-box" drivers native to Windows, like Dell out-of-box drivers, usually have minimum firmware versions. I suspect that is what you are running into.

You should update the BIOS, then the ESM before updating anything else. Then you can update the PERC, although you should update the NIC, backplane, drives, and DRAC (if present) as soon as possible following installation.

You might also try it by removing the second drive/VD or creating partitions manually via command prompt/diskpart. Make sure you INITIALIZE the VD when you create it - that can cause the VD not to be seen or usable.

The format SHOULD be fast ... it does not do a full format - it does a quick format as part of the install. Normally, you would not even SEE the format phase.
