Never power down to introduce a hot-swappable drive.  Just insert it.  After several seconds, it should show on your list of Physical Disks in OMSA.  If it shows Ready, then you can configure it in a RAID array (dropdown menu for PERC).  If it shows foreign, then that foreign configuration must first be cleared (also from the controller menu).

In the Raid Array, is this where I configure the new HD as an external drive?

Don't think of it as an "external drive" - it is bound to mess you up.  It is not an external drive - it is an internal drive.  You are just using the drive as an individual/standalone drive, but you must configure it as its own RAID array.

I am not sure what you meant cleared Foreign.

If the drive doesn't show up as foreign, then don't worry about it.

Yes, RAID 0 is the only RAID configuration that can take a single drive.  You're welcome.

Under Storage, you will find the PERC controller.  Under the PERC controller is a Virtual Disks section where you can view configured disks and their members - you CAN create a new Virtual Disk (just another name for a RAID array) from that screen by clicking on the Create Virtual Disk Wizard link above the list of Virtual Disks.  However, the actual option to create a new Virtual Disk is under Storage, PERC - click on the PERC, then click on the Information/Configuration link/sub-tab at the top of the page, then select Create/New from the dropdown menu of Available Tasks for the controller.

The PERC 5/6 will take up to 2TB drives, so the size is not an issue.  However, speaking of drives, you should not be using desktop/laptop/NAS drives in a server - they should be enterprise-class drives.

Yes, both take you to the same place (the link on the Virtual Disks screen is just a shortcut, which points to the one on the Controller screen).

If by "external" you mean a "standalone" (internal) drive (not part of a/the RAID array), then yes, it can be configured as a single-disk RAID 0 to be used by itself.  This can be done in the CTRL-R utility during POST or from the OpenManage Server Administrator software in the OS.

I am not familiar with the Open/Manage Server Administrator software.

OMSA:

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=V1JDD&fileId=3365593125&osCode=WNET&productCode=poweredge-2900&languageCode=EN&categoryId=SM

Download and run to extract contents, then run C:\Openmanage\windows\setup.exe.  Choose Custom and make sure that Storage Management is installed.  Add yourservernameoripaddress:1311 to IE's Intranet Zone.  You must have SP2 installed to run OMSA.

You will find the option under Storage, PERC, Information/Configuration (link at top of page), Create/New from dropdown menu of Available Tasks for the controller.

Thank you and sorry for the delayed response. I did find that OMSA version 5.2.0 is installed already. So at this point do I just insert the new HD on one of the slot, while it is running or do I need to shutdown, insert the new HD and power up? Thank you again

One more question (btw, I will be performing this tomorrow.): you can configure it in a RAID array (dropdown menu for PERC), is that the Virtual Disk area? Also, the drive capacity I am adding in is a 2 TB HD, would that be a problem?

so I can either use the Create Virtual Disk Wizard or go to Information/Configuration link and either ones will allow me to create the RAID 0 for my new internal drive.
