64 bit VMs on ESX

I want to buya low cost server that can run ESX 3.x and that would also support 64 bit VMs. The requirement is that the server must support VT in the BIOS. The processors must also support VT and also EM64T.

This is for my home to learn ESX so I need cheep, not super fast, etc.

Thanks

ESX has relatively high hardware requirements.

You can check the ESX compatibility guide here.

A quick check of this list shows the Poweredge 1950 to be the 'smallest' currently shipping server that's been validated. However, if you're ok with looking for 2nd hand servers, the 2600 or 2650 can probably be picked up for a nice price.

One note: the 26x0 series can only use 80-pin SCSI drives, where the 1950 can use SATA drives, which could save you on the cost of some storage space.

In ESX 64-bit guests only work on VT enabled processors. That is any at this link:

Also ESX does not support SATA drives until ESX 3.5 due for release in Dec. Only SCSI and SAS are supported.

If you still want 64-bit guest and cheap, I would say a PowerEdge 1950 or a desktop with a VPro CPU and a SCSI adapter preferrably Adaptec. Obviously the Vpro setup will not be supported by VMware.

If you can handle 32-bit than any Dell server of the last 5 years with a SCSI drive will do. Faster the better.
