Adding 2 8gb RDIMM ECC sticks to R710 Server

I went to add 2 sticks of 8gb DDR3L-1600 RDIMM 1.35V CL11 via crucial to my R710 and it wouldn't boot. I realized the 4 x 2gb ram I already have is UDIMM and I can't mix so I took them out thinking I can still go to 16gb on the RDIMM. Now during post I get a message saying Advanced ECC mode can't be used with this memory configuration. Does Advanced ECC require a different RDIMM or do I need more slots populated or is it something else?

Hello

Advanced ECC disables the first channel, so a DIMM should not be populated in A1 if advanced ECC is the memory mode being used. The DIMMs should be in A2 and A3. If you set the mode to optimizer then they should be in A1 and A2. There should be a diagram of the memory layout on the chassis cover.

Thanks
