Boot from IDE CD-ROM...
Good morning all,
Here's my dilema. I am the IT manager for Stafford Fire Dept. No. 1 in Stafford, CT. We just had someone donate a Dell 2200 PowerEdge server for us to use as our webserver for the website I am currently designing.
First thing I did was open the box up, and here's what I have found. 448MB RAM (3x128M, 1x64MB), 2x4.3GB SCSI (Western Digital and Seagate), SCSI CD-ROM. Now, the CD-ROM had no cable to connect it to the system, nor could I find a port on the system for that type of cable. Instinctivly I grabbed a spare Promise Ultra100 PCI IDE card and dropped it in, along with an IDE CD-ROM. Went into the BIOS and here's #1, no option to boot from CD. So I figured, "ok, I'll just boot from a Windows 98 Startup disk and run Windows 2003 server setup right off the CD"... problem #2, 98SE startup drivers don't recognize the Ultra100 CD-ROM.
Now, I got NO software with this server, so I am really in trouble. Using the system as it is now, I need to do one of the following:
A) Boot from IDE CD-ROM
B) Get a boot disk which recognizes the IDE CD-ROM so I can run Win2K3 Server setup manually.
Thanks.

I reproduced your scenario. And it works.
First you need to know that the SCSI CDROM does not Like CDRW recorded faster than 4x so if you are using CDRW media copies of software then you need to make dupes at 4x speed or you will get CRC errors.
Second the Onboard 7860/7960 adaptec SCSI is Dell proprietary.
Third When you put in a Promise IDE 66,100,OR 133 UDMA PCI Controller you must use a BUS MASTER slot or its unhappy.
So what you do is this.
1. Make a WIN98 Startup floppy.
The reason for this is 2 fold. You must format your drive FAT32 and you must
copy the CDROM onto the C:\ AFTER. Boot from the DISK and FORMAT C: /S
2. Download the MSDOS SCSI Driver for the Power Edge 2200 from Dell.
3. Copy the ASPI8DOS.SYS file onto the win98 startup floppy and put it in where a file called ASPIU8DOS.SYS is in the config.sys and delete the ASPIu8DOS.SYS file.
4. Then boot from the WIN9X startup disk. Format C: Fat32.
Then XCOPY the entire 2000/2003 server CDROM onto C: The CD will be D: if there is only i ide drive so you would XCOPY D:\ C:\ /E /S /V
5. The Reason for this is that there is some kind of conflict with the Promise Bios and the 2200 bios. When you have that controller in it will not boot from the scsi cdrom.
6. Oonce you have copied the contents of the CDROM onto C:\ you goto C:\I386
Then type WINNT /S:C:\ /T:C:\ The WIN2000 or 2003 setup will start and you
will be able to install 2000 or 2003 server. The only other caveot is that
if you have a PERC Raid Controller you must press F6 when it says detecting
devices and install the WIN2000 PERC II scsi driver.
I have tried this and it works. I tried it with a Promise ULTRA 33/66/100/133 controller. I have one of each. All work. Some of the Promise cards were really old and needed firmware updates to support drives larger than 60 gigs.
Also there is an FDISK Patch for WIN98/98SE.
