Can I used normal SSDs in Dell T410

Hi

 

My home server is T410, I want to replace the 2x 1TB HDD with SSDs

I am interested in model:

However, this is a 1TB SSD, and it is desktop model, will it work on my server?

 

and if I dont want to achieve RAID, do still I need to buy RAID Controller to connect these disks into my motherboard?

 

the RAID Controller currently is PERC6i, and I believe it is 3Gb/s

while the SSD disks I want are 6Gb/s

You must use a controller if using a backplane - you cannot plug the backplane into the onboard SATA ports.

You would need to find a way to adapt the power to provide for the drives.

With your setup, I would replace the PERC 6 with an H200 and run the drives "unconfigured" (non-RAID), to essentially pass them through as individual drives.

You can connect them to the PERC, but 1) they may not work (Samsung in general don't always work on RAID controllers, and the EVO is an especially poor choice - use the Pro), and 2) they will be limited to 3Gbps. There is no guarantee that non-certified drives will work, and the further way from that that you get, the less likely they will work (like using low-end desktop/laptop SSD's, like the EVO).

You are better off trying/starting with Intel SSD's in a server if you aren't willing/able to buy certified/enterprise SSD's. You should be able to connect them to the motherboard, but if you do, remove your PERC.

I think the best is to test it myself and see the result. 

 

I have some confusion on:

can I connect my disks to SAS Backplane and remove RAID Controller PERC ?

or I must use it with PERC !?

The SAS Backplane on my server is k470m, I did not find its specs, does it have throughput limitation? , or it does not affect disks speed? 

 

The SATA ports available on the motherboard has a limit of 300 Mb/s (according to the Datasheet), and also I dont see enough power connectors if I connect the disks this way, while SAS Backplane has power cable connected.
