Changing service tag on 13th generation motherboards

Can you change the service tag on motherboards of 13th generation servers?  For the previous generations, the asset.com tool allowed you to change the service tag if you replaced the motherboard.  That same tool does not work on 13th generation servers.

We've been told that you can set the service tag if the motherboard is in BIOS manufacturing mode, but we can't find a way to change the mode.

Ryan: do you know a way to set the BIOS in manufacturing mode on the 12th generation servers?

Hello.

Here are the steps to change the Service Tag after motherboard replacement:

1. Boot up the system

2. Press to enter the System Setup

3. Review Setup information and click on Service Tag Settings

4. Enter the Service Tag

Note that you can only enter the Service Tag when its field is empty. Ensure that you enter the correct tag as it cannot be updated or changed once entered.

5. Click OK

Robert - We were hoping that was not the answer.  Do you know why that got locked down?  Let's say someone damages a board while changing out a component.  That is outside the Dell warranty coverage so we'd have to replace the board on our own.  How do we get that board to match the service tag?

The 13G servers have Easy Restore feature that allows you to restore your service tag and other system configuration data after replacing the system board. This data restoration is prompted by BIOS once it detects a new system board. If it did not prompt you on first boot, try to enter the LifeCycle Controller to allow it re-sync the tag information. Exit the LCC and  to see if it then prompts you to import the original service tag. You might also want to compare the BIOS versions on the system boards and ensure that it is up to date on the new board.

Robert - That process only works for new system boards without a service tag.  If we replace the service tag from a board in our own inventory, the import profile function will not continue once it identifies an existing service tag on the motherboard and records a failure in the Lifecycle Log.

Ryan,

There is no way to change the service tag of a 12g or 13g motherboard once it has been set. If a new service tag is required, you would require a replacement motherboard and TPM module (if your server came with one).

As ridiculous as it sounds, that is the only way.

You could change the service Tag if the systemboard is not new, by setting the Jumper too.

you need to disable the PWD jumper on board and then you are able to change the Service tag in BIOS
