Dell PowerEdge R740xd NVMe

We are trying to install some 3.84TB NVMe U.2 2.5" SSDs into our Dell R740xd server.  They are not recognizing.  We have updated the BIOS and lifecycle controller.

1.  Do we need to have the NVMe PCIe extender expansion card/cable?  Dell P/N 01YGFW 0W6N4M.  Or will the backplane recognize NVMe without this expansion kit?

2.  Can we install NVMe and SATA SSDs into the same backplane?

Thank you.  As always, appreciate the help.

Thank you Chris.  Here is backplane P/N - K2Y8N

It is a 24 Bay SFF server

TheServerNinja,

It would depend on the backplane that is installed, as there are backplanes that do support them, and some that don't.
Please confirm the part number of the backplane you have installed and I can confirm it for you.

If you have a backplane that supports NVME drives then you can install the drives there directly. Also the controller won't have an issue using SATA SSD and NVME drives on the same backplane, as long as they aren't in the same Virtual Drive.

Let me know if this helps.

That backplane does look to support SAS/SATA/and NVME drives.

Hope this helps, and let me know how it goes.

Connecting NVMe drives to R740xd x24 backplane need PCIe extender card and cables. Each 4 NVMe drives need one PCIe extender card. How many NVMe drives are you planning to connect to the server. You can refer below link for more details

I am in a similar situation, except with a R7425xd. Is there a post or documentation to show the linkage between which pcie connectors on the backplane (BP PCIe A0/B0 to BP PCIe A2/B2) support which drives on the backplane? I do not see this in the documentation. I have the same backplane as the original poster (NVME backplane with SAS expander board, shown in documentation to support both NVME and SAS/SATA drives).

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi @kjy101,

Would you mind confirming the server's model is R7425XD?

Apologies - It is the R7425 24 bay SFF server; The R740XD are also 24bay, so I often include the "xd" even if not needed.

The backplane I have has the 12 Sata/SAS/NLSAS + 12NVME connector, with the SAS expander connected - it is backed by a H730P currently, but Looking at either getting PCIe cables to connect to the connectors on the board, or a Dell 1YGFW/TJCNGNVME expander card to allow for the population of the NVME bays.

Hello kjy101,

I'll see if I can help you on this. Field changes of backplane is not supported as there are not kits, have to search piece parts to gather part numbers.

Can you look over the cabling diagrams and let me know the one you have  and the one you want?

Dell 1YGFW and TJCNG NVMe expander card is not supported on R7525. You need to connect NVMe connector to the Motherboard where S140 will manage the NVMe drives. Connection will be shown in "Figure 5" and "Figure 6" of below link

Hi,

I too have a Dell R740xd, but I have just now purchased new backplane for 24 x NVMe support. P/N for the backplane is 01YX3 & FJH5T. When I connect the Backplane to the Motherboard (SIG & Power Cables). The R740xd fails to POST entirely. It just turns on for a second and then goes offline. In LifeCycle Logs, I am getting the error as "The system board Pfault fail-safe voltage is outside of range". Can anyone help me understand the problem ? Also a probable fix would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.

Hi, AnushIntech. When did this happen? I mean have you had a part component replaced before the error? Or another thing I like to ask is does it have the same error without the cables plugged in?

Hi,

The server works absolutely fine with the existing backplane that I have with P/N: K2Y8N & 58D2W.

But fails on this new Backplane "01YX3 & FJH5T".

Hi @AnushIntech,

You might be facing cabling issue or incompatible cable. Any upgrades after the server is shipped out is not supported, as there is no proper documentation on which components are needed to make the system work.

Attached the cabling diagrams for R740XD: https://dell.to/3yuUnBC

Hi,

I have followed this cabling but still the same error. What else can I do to diagnose it ?

I have also updated all versions to latest like CPLD, BIOS, Firmware etc.

Hi as Joey said Im also suspecting some compatibility issue since you no issues with the original/previous components. Also that part is not even a CRU Customer Replaceable Unit as far as I know so if it was processed by a Dell engineer theres got to be some history log left in the system.
