Dell Poweredge R420 check serial port status
Hi,
I have a Dell Poweredge R420 as an ESXi server with many VM running. I need to configure my R420 to communicate to my UPS using the serial port.
I know that we can enable the serial port (COM 1) by rebooting the server and login to the System Services and check on it, but is there any other alternative way to check whether my COM 1 port is enabled? I don't want to power down my VMs.
If that's the case, is there any way to enable COM 1 port without rebooting the server?

Hi,
If you already have Openmanage Server Administrator installed you can check the port status, but if you need to install it that requires a reboot. If you have a powered off VM you could try adding direct access to a serial port and see if it sees it. If it is not enabled you will need to reboot to enable it and it is best practice to not hot add serial connections.
