Dell R640 NVME PM1725a not showing in iDRAC
Hi,
We have jus bought a Dell R640 with a backplane that takes 2 SATA drive and 8 NVME drives.
I came from Dell with 2 SATA drives and a PM1725a NVME 800Gb
We hopped to use the SATA drives in RAID1 to act as Hyper-V host then add some more PM1725a NVME drives in RAD1 or RAID10 for VM guests.
I have two questions if I may.
1) We have added a couple of PM1725a 800Gb NVME drives bought from our supplier (not Dell), they show up in the BIOS but not the iDRAC or Server Open Management from the OS. Does anyone know how to get them recognised by the iDRAC or what we might be missing.
2) To enable RAID on the S140 controller it looks like you have to set the BOOT MODE to UEFI which stops the host OS booting from the SATA drives in the backplane on bays 0 and 1. Can you not have RAID1 on the H740 and boot from the SATA drives and have RAID enabled on the S140 at the same time?

Hello
When you add new hardware to the system you may need to restart the iDRAC or the server to get information to update properly. I suggest restarting the iDRAC. Also, there are some limitations to what is displayed when the S140 is in RAID mode. This is covered on page 223 of the iDRAC manual.

Yes, RAID mode for NVMe is only supported in UEFI mode. This is covered in the S140 manual. If the operating system was installed on those disks when the boot mode was set to BIOS then they will not boot correctly if you change the mode to UEFI. You will likely need to reinstall the operating system.

Hi Daniel,
Sorry for the follow up bi I have a similar issue..
I have an R640 server with two Dell 600GB 10K drives and I am trying to add a Samsung DCT 983 NVMe drive.
For some reason, it is not detected..
Is there some combination of settings that I should use (like AHCI, etc.)?
It is possible to combine 2 SAS drives with an NVMe drive in the same server?
