Dell T110: VM's dropping network connection in VMware ESXi 4.1
Clean install of ESXI 4.1 on brand new Dell T110. Created a clean Windows 2008 R2 virtual machine. Everything works fine, except that I get intermittent network problems from the VM.
If I ping the VM from another computer, it works for a while, then no reply for a few minutes, then works again, with no activity on the VM. Pinging the host gives NO problem at all, ping always replies, also at the times where the VM won't respond. While inbound pings are dead, I tried outbound pings while logged into the VM via console. Outbound from the VM is no problem at all. The logs on host and VM show absolutely nothing. Just normal operation.
My IP setup is:
Host: 192.168.178.100
BMC: 192.168.178.101
VM: 192.168.178.200
After 2 days I found a workaround. I set "IPMI over LAN" in the Dell T110 BMC Bios to "OFF"
Check out this PDF on page two, the screenshot on the top left: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/power/ps4q04-20040204-murphy.pdf
It's not really a good solution to disable BMC, but I've been running continuous pings since 8 hours now and the connection hasn't failed once yet.
Does anyone have an idea, how to configure BMC correctly?
Thanks!

Hi,
I've having the same problem, but on IBM Blade server though.
Did you find out the root cause of the problem?
Much appreciated for the help.

Maybe use a dedicated NIC for IPMI/BMC/DRAC instead of 1 NIC for LAN and these.
