Dell T420 memory

Hello,

I have Dell T420 with 2 CPU Xeon E5-2407

currently, I have 4 modules of Samsung 1Rx4 PC3L-12800R DDR3 1600 ECC M393B1G70BH0-YK0 (8GB) - total of 32GB.

I wish to add additional 4 modules of the same memory, for total of 64GB.

1 - is it possible?

2 - where to place the memory?

Thank you for the service tag, Roei.

With 2 processors and 8gb DIMMs, you can only go up to 48gb. 6 DIMMs. In the linked manual, page 43 is the start of the memory section. Page 47 shows the population rules with 2 processors.

Hello

Thank you.

How do you explain that in this manual, my system supports 2R x4 (1333 MT/s) and 2R x4, (1600 MT/s) memory modules, while in fact, my DIMM's are 1Rx4?

Hi Roie,

I went back and re-looked at the population rules and looks like I told you wrong. If you look at the single processor configurations, you can populate A1, A2, A3, & A4 for 32GB. For 64GB that you want, populate B1, B2, B3, B4.

I am not sure why the sample configurations doesn't show it, but a dual rank slot can support a single rank DIMM.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.
