Does PowerEdge 840 hardware support Intel Virtualisation Technology?

Hi, I'm looking to buy a server for home use, to test and dev virtualisation technologies like XenSource and the new Windows Server 2008 Viridian Windows Server Virtualisation Hyper-V technologies.

I've priced up a Dell PowerEdge PE840 (SV118401)
With the following processor
Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processor X3210, 2x4MB Cache, 2.13GHz, 1066MHz FSB

On Intel's website they state that this processor does support the Intel Virtualisation Technologies and is x64.   However they also state on the website that.....

Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT), Intel® Trusted Execution Technology (Intel® TXT), and Intel® 64 architecture require a computer system with a processor, chipset, BIOS, enabling software and/or operating system, device drivers and applications designed for these features. Performance will vary depending on your configuration. Contact your vendor for more information

So this is me contacting the vendor......

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Regards

Simon

Simon,

The 840 does not support Virtualization.  However the SC1430 and the SC440 do support this feature.

thanks for that I'll look into the SC1430

Do you know if it's possible to add a decent graphics card on this server?
Some of the newer stuff that Citrix can do with Presentation Server can make use of high power graphics cards... Nvidia Quadro FX (I think they used in a demo last month), so it'd be great to know if these types of cards would also slot in.

regards
Simon

To my knowledge, video cards are not tested in our system.  This would have to be trial and error, as long as the manufacturer has drivers, I wouldn't see a problem.

It's been a few months since this thread had activity.  I'm hoping that there is some new information.

I need to get a departmental class server for a lab I am setting up.  I need to have Win2008 (host OS) with Hyper-V guests running 64bit Windows 2008.  Microsoft's server catalogue:

http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/results.aspx?&bCatID=1333&cpID=543&avc=11&ava=0&avq=0&OR=3&PGS=25&ready=0

does not list either the SC440 or the SC1430 for Hyper-V support.  They do list the SC1435 with AMD, but I don't even see that model on Dell's Web site.

What Dell servers are officially supported for Hyper-V?  Is there a list somewhere, or something in the server specs that will spell this out clearly?

Thanks, Don

I just upgraded my PowerEdge 840 to a Xeon 3050.  I have the A08 Bios installed and I'm happy to say it supports the 64 bit mode using VMWare's ESXi 5.0 product after going into the bios and enabling the VT-x support.  I don't know about Hyper-V, but if it works on VMWare, there's a good chance on Hyper-V now.
