F10 Utility Mode - PE 1950

Hello,

I am running ESX 4.1 on PE 1950.  The problem, I am facing is F10 utility mode is not working.  When, I boot the server and press F10 - I see the message entering utility mode.   The server goes through the boot process and, I don't get utility mode.  It goes straight to ESX 4.  How can, I get F10 utility mode to work.  I did not change anything on the PE 1950.  Just upgraded the BIOS to 2.7.  That is it.  Look forward to your help.

The reason, I want to enter F10 utility mode to check on RAID configuration and make some change if possible.

RG,

Utility Mode only contains diagnostics and is only functional if the Dell installation utility (SBUU or SMTD) is used to install a supported OS.

The latest version of those diagnostics can be downloaded from http://support.dell.com/ and run from a variety of different media:

The Utility Partition also has nothing to do with the RAID controller.  To check the configuration of your RAID controller, you need to enter the configuration utility for the RAID controller during POST ... if you have a SAS 5/6, you will have a CTRL-C option, and if you have a PERC 5/6, you will have a CTRL-R option.

What RAID controller do you have, what RAID configuration, and what changes are you thinking of making?

Thanks to your reply & diagnostics link.

I am using SAS 5/6.  The server has 2 hard drives of 150GB each (RAID1).  I thought of killing the RAID to make use of both the HD.  Is it possible on PE 1950?

As, I am running ESX 4.1 will have to check on SBUU/SMTD if it is supported for vSphere (ESX4.1).  Thanks for the tip.

The SAS 5/iR and the SAS 6/iR will support non-RAID, so yes, you could use the drives individually, BUT ...

This can only be done be deleting RAID and leaving it unconfigured, so you would have to backup your data, delete the RAID config, then restore the data to the individual disk.

An easier way?  Add a drive** or two drives in a new RAID 1.

**I am unsure if it will let you have a mix of configured and unconfigured drives, so RAID 1 with two drives may be your only alternative for adding a drive(s).
