How to add hard drive to Dell R710

Hi,

I would like to add storage to our R710 server. How can I check the available slots and how can I add the hard drives and which type of disks I can add ?

Please suggest. I need to increase the storage for datastore size for ESXi work. Thanks!

Hi,

Which RAID controller are you using? What RAID level are you using?

You should have the OMSA VIB installed to be able to check there. If not, until you do, you will need to boot to the CTRL-R utility to manage RAID.

I don't think its installed. Do I need to install OMSA/VIB on ESXi box? What is the other way to find out? The box is running VMware ESXi .

Without OMSA, the only way is to connect using the iDRAC or reboot it to the BIOS utility.

Can I check from iDRAC without reboot? I mean is there any menu options in iDRAC. I am not able to see any storage option in iDRAC web console....

If you don't have a Storage option from the iDRAC and you haven't installed the necessary management tools in the OS, then you will need to reboot to check the status.

If I enable IPMI from iDRAC console, will that give me the information I am looking for using ipmitool then?

Dell DRAC_6 does cannot display storage information, that feature came on iDRAC_7 and newer.  The best option is to install the Dell OpenMange Server Administrator for ESXi.  With OMSA GUI, the tasks of creating Virtual Disks, or expanding the capacity of an existing VD is much easier.  Reply back with the version of the installed ESXi and I will provide the how to install OMSA info.

Cheers.
