Memory upgrade for poweredge r410

Hi,

I have a PowerEdge R410 Dell Server service Tag: { { {Svc Tag Removed by Moderator}}}

1 cpu

2 x (4gb HMT351U7BFR8A) 8GB total

Can i upgrade with the following Crucial memory modules:

2 x  CT8G3ERSLD8160B (DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • DUAL RANKED • X8 BASED • REGISTERED • ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V • 1024MEG X 72 •)

or

2 x CT8G3ERSLS4160B (DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • SINGLE RANKED • X4 BASED • REGISTERED • ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V • 1024MEG X 72 •)

giving a total of 24GB.

Are they compatible on the same system?

which configuration should i use?

thanks in advance.

RaulOliveira,

Both dimm specs look to be compatible, but with them having different data widths (X4 and X8) we will likely need to split them in order to keep the channels matching. I would suggest the 8160 (X8) in slots A1 and A4, then the 4160 (X4) in slot A and A3. This is based on the server being in Optimized mode, as Adv ECC wouldn't support different widths.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi, thanks for your answer,

Probably I was not enlightening enough,

I have on my system

2x HMT351U7BFR8A

They both come with the system

I need to add more ram to the server

should i buy

 2 x  CT8G3ERSLD8160B

or

2 x CT8G3ERSLS4160B

to add to the existing configuration, keeping the 2x HMT351U7BFR8A

Sorry about that, I misunderstood your request. Looking at the replies I agree with SebFVR though, matching the data width would be the recommended route.

Hi,

the memory DIMM that you actually have on your system is 4Gb 2Rx8 PC3L that mean DIMM are dual rank, x8 data width, low voltage (1,35V instead 1,50V).

Mixing x4 and x8 data width is possible, I have it on a r410 server, but it's not ideal and you will get an alert during the POST and a F1 prompt (possiblity to desactivate it so).

Your actual memory, HMT351U7BFR8A, is dual rank 2R, x8 width, so the best for your upgrade is to get same specs DIMM.

IMO looks at the bay to find same DIMM (ie HMT351U7BFR8A), you will find them with no problem and with a very cheap price and you can even buy 2, 4 or 6 more, so 32Gb total on your system for a lowest cost...

Thank you very much for that option,

I was looking in eBay and is  very good deal, but i got another doubt.

The system supports 2 cpus, but, it only has 1.

The maximum memory is still the 32gb using all slots 16GB on rank 1(4x4GB) and more 16GB on rank 2(4x4GB), or i can't use rank 2 because i don't have the second CUP?

Sorry for my english...

I did not pay attention to the fact that there is only one CPU in your server, so only 4 slot is enable... you need two CPU for using all 8 DIMM slots.
