No VGA out put on Poweredge 2950

HI,

I have dell poweredge 2950 which was in perfect working condition. This server was not in use for about 3-4 months. But now I can't get a VGA output when I turn this machine on. Though there is no error. Tried resetting NVRAM and changed the battery as well. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Try reseating the processor(s) ... try only one proc in slot 1, moving proc 2 to slot 1, etc.

@theflash1932

Tried as you suggested but still no video output. anything else am I missing which causes this?

That is the most common fix for a no-video situation, which is why I suggested that ... and since you only said you cleared the NVRAM (the second-most common fix).

There is little else that is routinely effective in resolving a no-video issue.  You might try taking the system to its bare minimum ... remove the drives (HDD's and optical), all cards (including RAID controller and DRAC), all memory but one in slot 1, with a single processor in slot 1 only.  Be sure to reseat both risers (they are required to complete POST however).

Like I said, there is little else it could be ... if you have tried all of the above, there really only remains a faulty motherboard/video chip.

There may be hope :emotion-1:

Many have tried installing PCIe graphics cards in their power edge servers with varying results. This could be something to consider, especially if your PE2950 is not a production machine, you have an old unused low power PCIe graphics card lying about and you don't want to purchase another motherboard (even if they are inexpensive).

Some posts discuss getting PCIe graphics working on PE 1800/2800/2850. Some got it working, others not. Unfortunately the difficulty you will have is that you can't DISABLE the integrated video controller within your system BIOS which can make it a hit and miss affair to find a card that doesn't conflict with the integrated video and is able to take over the video output on the server.

I had no such issues as i could disable integrated graphics on my T610 so it was a simple process :emotion-1:

Basically you can modify an old low power x16 PCIe card so that it fits a x8 PCIe slot on your server. This is simply done using a fine toothed hack saw to cut a slot in the card connector itself by sawing away pins 50 to 53. Here's my modified card

Install the card and if the server has issues booting or the card does not work, you may need to force the PCIe bus to use the specific number of lanes available on the card/slot. This is achieved by using a short thin wire as a patch lead on the PCIe slot itself between pin A1(hot plug presence detect) and pin B31 (hot plug detect for x4 lanes) or pin B48 (hot plug detect for x8 lanes). See PCIe pinouts and Marc Bevand's Whitepixle blog for details.

It's worth searching the forums but this post thread might be helpful, read it all.

Yes, it's a hack and it's not supported by Dell or your graphics card provider. Your on your own if it does not work and you somehow damage your system (unlikely) BUT spoils go to the victors :emotion-1:

Do CLEAR CMOS.

Is battery discharged? both, for BIOS and HW RAID cache?

Does it has iDRAC? Does it boot?

He has already cleared the NVRAM (CMOS).

Per my suggestion, he has removed the DRAC (no 'i' for this generation of server).

Neither battery (simply being 'discharged' or even bad) should cause this type of issue.

Has anyone had much luck with this as I have the same issue with my 1850?!
