PE 2850 and Xeons and Hyper-V
I have a PowerEdge 2850. It will run Windows Server 2008.
It will not run Hyper-V. I want to run Hyper-V.
Stock, the PowerEdge 2850 has a Xeon ___(What is the codename of this processor?)____. It is 8G and does not support VT-x in the processor, I need at least a 9G (I think?) that does support VT-x in the processor in order to use Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008.
What would that processor be called? (The Codename) Would that processor I need run on this motherboard?
thanks

I can't tell you the codenames right off (Nocona and Irwindale, I think), but in order to use a processor with dual cores or VT (Paxville), you need the rare 2850 II. Otherwise, you need a PowerEdge 2950.

So I can't just pop out the stock CPU and put in another?

Ugh, darn. Well, is there any other way to run Hyper-V on a 2850?

Ouch.
Well, at least I can get a 2850 II for about $100. But I already have the 2850...

PE2850 II does not support VT-x either. I have two of them with dual Paxville dual cores. There are no processors for 2850 that will support VT-x. You will have to buy a 2950 or higher for that.

Interesting ... I hadn't checked ... just assumed the Paxville would also support VT. Which model Paxville do you have? All the 7000-series do support VT ... I'm assuming you have the non-7000 2.8GHz, which does not support VT. The TDP may be too high on the 7000-series to work in the 2850.
