POWEREDGE 2900 III NOISE
Hi, we plan to purchase few PE 2900 to run simulations and store data. I read quite some posts about how noisy the new PE is. I would like to have some quantitative info about the noise level expressed in dB and not with adjectives (somewhat, quite, very, extremely etc...). :)
I can not believe Dell did not perform any noise measurement on these machines. The argument that being the PE a server nobody really cares can not be applied to a Tower chassis model. If I buy a rack mounted PC I will place it in a computing room, but if I buy a Tower one I will likely put it under my desk. In fact this is our plan, put the machines in our office.
All info are welcome, but in particular I would like to know what is the noise level when both the CPUs are running at 100% for an extended period of time (we plan to buy the double QuadCore configuration).

I bought it just last week and the noise is unacceptably noisy. I use it in my home office and I regret it ever since. I should have bought the HP ML350G5 instead as people says it's quite as a mouse.
There is no way you can use it under your desk you will go crazy. The noise comes from the fan and yes it is really stupid Dell chose to use such noisy fans. I suspect it is considered appealing to give a feeling of "power" but they're wrong!!! Who cares about strong fans!
If Dell is reading this I stronger urge them to send out replacement fans to fix this. The server is very well built and feature rich and the price is excellent but Jesus the noise is killing me!!!

I suppose that aswers my question. No DELL server. I will consider the HP option.

Just checked the specs of the HP server. I found this:
Acoustic Noise Listed are the declared A-Weighted sound power levels (LWAd) and declared average bystander position A-Weighted sound pressure levels (LpAm) when the product is operating in a 23°C ambient environment. Noise emissions were measured in accordance with ISO 7779 (ECMA 74) and declared in accordance with ISO 9296 (ECMA 109). IdleThis is what I was expecting from DELL. Anyway, 53dB is really low noise. I am going for this.

I would definitely agree, qualitatively, that HP servers are MUCH quieter.
This is my first DELL, non rack, a 2900. I have always worked with HPs, and never had an issue with noise, so it never even occurred to me to check decibel levels.

My fans are to fast too!
