PowerEdge 2950 running louder than normal

Hey Guys,

I know this model the 2950 generally has a problem of running loud, but recently i have found that my server are running a little extra loudly and i was wondering if the readings i'm getting are wrong or if the fans themselves are the problem.

These are the readings i am getting from Open Manage Server Administrator:

System Board FAN 1 RPM 6300 RPM [N/A] [N/A] 3450 RPM [N/A]
System Board FAN 2 RPM 6450 RPM [N/A] [N/A] 3450 RPM [N/A]
System Board FAN 3 RPM 5850 RPM [N/A] [N/A] 3450 RPM [N/A]
System Board FAN 4 RPM 5850 RPM [N/A] [N/A] 3450 RPM [N/A]

System Board Ambient Temp 23.0 C 8.0 C 42.0 C 3.0 C 47.0 C

Are these readings normal? If any other information is required please let me know.

Thank you.

Update the BMC first, then start a bios update, which will require a restart for each one.

What is the current bios level and firmware level on the BMC\ESM?  If these are not current, they can lead to higher fan speeds.

Yes,  Thank you.

Your bios is at 1.5.1; the current level is 2.7.0;  it is 8 updates out of date.  The BMC is at 1.31; the current level is 2.37

What OS are you running on this server? I can provide the links to bring it current.  You will need to stair step the bios update or risk losing data if you try to bring it current all at once.

These can be ran inside Windows.  As when making any changes to your server, a backup is recommended prior to running the updates.

Just wanted to chime in and say if you added memory to the server, that could be the cause of the louder fans.  After I upgraded a PE 2950 III from 8GB of RAM to 32 GB, the fans were noticeably louder.  (BIOS 2.7.0) From the research I did, this appears to be normal behavior to compensate for the extra heat generated by the additional memory sticks.
