I have a dual processor PowerEdge R710 that current has 8 sticks of dual rank 2GB UDIMMS. I am attempting to upgrade the server to 32GB and ordered 2 matching 8GB dual ranked UDIMMS.
Called Dell and well they are unsure does anyone know what would be the correct placement to get this all to work in Optimized mode?
Original Configuration  16GB Optimized Mode

Current Configuration  28GB Advanced ECC Mode, Replaced the 2GB sticks in A2 and B2 with the 8GB sticks and getting boot error as described but all works other wise.

Four 4GB sticks and 4 2GB sticks would give you a configuration that won’t give an error. We never shipped UDIMMs greater than 2GB, but it probably, as you have found, works fine, it just isn’t validated. The recommended way to get to 32GB is to buy four 8GB RDIMMS and replace all of the existing memory.

The memory channels don’t match, so you are going to get an error, A2,A5 and A3,A6 and the same on the B side are the channels, the 2,5 channels have 10GB total memory and the 3,6 channels have only 4GB.

So from this no matter the mode/configuration I will get an error.
To even this out and get it working I would need to return both of the 8GB sticks and buy 4 sticks of 4GB, so that I could get this system to 32GB with the below configuration.

Also I see this document states  1GB and 2GB UDIMMs are supported for a total of up to 24 GB.

Configured system with 2 processor sockets.
When installing the modules, the memory frequency is reduced to 800Mhz.
My questions are:
How much memory can I put into the system using 8Gb modules without reducing system speed and performance?
What slots should I use?
Should I set up optimized or advanced Ecc?
