PowerEdge SC1435 Opteron 2300 Series Processor Upgrade

I've got two SC1435 servers. I purchased some Opteron 2300 series CPUs (two 2350s and two 2389s) I've tried both models in both servers and neither will boot. When I power on the server, I just get a blank screen and nothing ever happens. I've tried updating the bios on one of the servers, then resetting the NVRAM, but I got the same results.

The documentation says that these servers support the 2300 series, but no luck.

Any ideas?

It looks like those model of processors should work. Do the servers seem to work fine with the original processor in? What processors came with the server?

Generally when you update the BIOS , it is a good idea to update the BMC also.

When you are installing the newer processors, are you trying one at a time? Or both at the same time?

When the processors are installed do any of the LED indicators come on?

Let us know what you find,

Thanks.

I tried both processors at once, in matching pairs. I'll have to check on the LEDs. I've updated the BMC firmware, and I'll try again tomorrow.

Hi,

i am not sure as i am researching the compatible processors as well atm but i think the SC1435 only supoorts Hypertransport 1 and the fastest processor compatible might be the 2384...

But I'd love to hear whether you got the 2389 working:)

I have SC1435's running Opteron 2354's so I know that works.  I had to upgrade the firmware on my SC1435's to the most recent to get it working.

I'm now trying to figure out if the 8360 SE's will work on a Dell 6950 and no one has been able to answer that question yet..

I verified today when I received my 8360 SE's (2.5Ghz Quad Core) work in my SC1435's with BMC and BIOS upgraded to most recent versions.

Please let us know if you get the 2389's working.

Correct.  I was just saying so far all HT1's I've tried work.  I doubt HT3 processors in the same generation are going to work.

Both 8360s and 2354s are HT1 processors...

I haven't been able to get it working.

According to Dell support there are two or more mainboard versions, one with HT1, one with HT3...  Call dell tech support - they might be able to check with the service tag...

trottig - Do you think the 8386 SE (HT1) will work on the SC1435 + Dell 6950?  The HT is HT1 and 1GHZ, but the difference I see between the 8360 SE and the 8386 SE is that the 8386 also has 2200Mhz Integrated Memory Controller.

www.cpu-world.com/.../AMD-Third%20Generation%20Opteron%208386%20SE%20-%20OS8386YAL4DGI.html

The 8360 SE does not list that.  It lists 2000Mhz Integrated Memory Controller Bus:

www.cpu-world.com/.../AMD-Third%20Generation%20Opteron%208360%20SE%20-%20OS8360YAL4BGH.html

Do you think those will work?  I don't want to waste a few hundred bucks to pickup the 8386 or other higher end models if not.

Well I am no expert and cant guaranteee it but in general I would assume that it should work - I'd expect the memory controller to run slower speeds if you use slower speed ddr2 ram - probably you can user faster memory with this processor (if all components support it). But again, to be sure call dell directly - they should know best and at least here in germany they were willing to help even if the server is out of warranty...

I wish I could get as helpful people as you have at Dell on the phone.  When I call and even speak about these processors I get the canned response of "Only x y and z processors are tested and supported".. I don't want support, I just wonder if they work.. lol

Guess I'll have to find out on my own.

Now im off to see whether Xeon 7140m will work in an 6850;)

what version of bios do you have ?, SC1435 is very good at managing lastest opterons, this is not the case of 6950 ...

Running 2.2.5.

6850 didnt work either - was a I not a II modell... €300 hardware upgrade to support the 7140M's was too much...

@ Laramie  - 89's wont work, those are HT3, they might work in the SC1435 II. The other ones i dont know, but check whether they utilize HT1or 3...
