PowerEdge T710 memory upgrade

Hi all,

I currently have a T710 with 144GB (18 slots of 8GB).  I'd like to take it to 192GB of RAM the cheapest way possible.

I'm mindful that I can't just drop some 16GB sticks in there, and that it has to be laid out a certain way (certain banks to certain processors etc).

Can someone advise me on what I need to buy and which configuration I should be looking at?

Many thanks,

-Mark

Brooky99,

With upgrading to 192GB from 144gb you would need to swap the 8GB dimms in the memory slots with the WHITE tabs (A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3) with the 16gb dimms. That will ensure that the 3 channels per CPU are populated the same. It is a valid configuration.

Let me know how it goes.

HI Chris,

Thanks for getting back to me.  I have a nasty suspicion my memory is quad-ranked, and that I can't mix it with dual-ranked RAM.

Is this correct?

Many thanks,

For Quad Rank Dimms mixed with Single or Dual Rank Dimms, the Quad Rank needs to be in the slot with the white ejection tabs (the first slot in each channel). There is no requirement for the order of Single Rank and Dual Rank Dimms. So if the 16's are Quads then it will still work.. If the 8gb dimms are quads then you may run into issues.

So the answer is to buy quad-rank 16GB modules, and place them in the white tab slots?

(I'm not chucking out all those quad-rank 8GB modules).

BTW... thank you for all your help... nice to have someone knowledgeable on the Community :-)

Hi Chris,

Can I just confirm that 16GB and 8GB quad-rank modules will all work together, as long as the 16GB modules are in the slots with the white tabs?

Many thanks,

-Mark

Hi,

Sorry to ask again, but can I just confirm that 16GB and 8GB quad-rank modules will all work together - as long as the 16GB modules are in the slots with the white tabs?

Many thanks,
