Powerdege R710 memory question

Hi,

We have an poweredge R710 that has total of 16 GB memory (4x2 gb per 2 processors)

If I Understood it correclty We can remove all the current 8X2 GB memories and replace them with  SNPP9RN2C/8G memories for our Poweredge R710.

The current memories for each CPU is: 2X2 GB memory in the 2 of 3 memory module (closes to CPU).

question:

If we upgrade to 4X8 GB memories  ,should the 8 gb memory also be 2 for each memroy module? or we can put only 1 X 8 GB memory in the 2 of 3 memory module (closes to CPU). for each processor? or this is not so?

for example:

If I want to upgrade the memories to 32 GB for this server I must buy 4 X8 GB and put 2 x 8 gb memory in the first and second memory module (closes to CPU) for CPU 1 and then 2 X 8 gb in the first and second module for the CPU 2, is this correct?

this is the current memory configuration in the server:

That is correct.

The correct memory configuration should be shown on the inside of the Server lid. The correct slots for the new memory would depend on what mode the memory is set to in the BIOS. If its on "Optimiser" mode then the memory is in slots 1 and 2, "Mirror" and "Advanced modes" it should be in slots 2 and 3. The slots are labelled on the motherboard. Usually the white slots are 1,2 and 3. Both CPU memory banks need to be the same.

Thanks for the replay,

we want to upgrade the totall memory to the 32 GB, we want to remove the current 8x2gb memories (becuase they cannot mix with 8 gb) and replace them with 4X 8GB new memories. can we use 1X8 GB in each of the 2 of the memory slots per processor? or instead of 4X8 gb we have to have 8X4GB memories and put them per paar as the current memory configuration? we already bought 4X8GB SNPP9RN2C/8G memories and I realy would like to know how can we use this new memories.

Thanks

Yes you can run each side on 2 x 8Gb. I would suggest trying slots 1 and 2 on each side. They will be the white clip slots. The numbers are on the motherboard.

Thanks for the update,

Ok we are going to us the new 4 X 8 GB memories and put them as you siad: 2 X 8 GB memories for the left processor, 1X8 GB memory in slots with white clip A1 and 1x8 GB memory in the slot with white clip A2 and the same for the right side Processor. should I change the memory setting in the bios? or the current Bios setting will accept the aboce momory configuration?

Thanks

Make sure both sides are identical. If you have DIMM's in A1,B1, make sure your settings are at Optimizer in the F2 bios.   Any other mode doesn't use those slots.

Hi Goff,

Thanks for yor replay,

Sorry but I am a bit confuse here,

We have  4X8GB "SNPP9RN2C/8G" memories, I will remove the current  8X2 gb memories, and replace them with new  4X8GB SNPP9RN2C/8G. I will put 1x8gb in the A1, 1x8Gb in the A2  and put 1x8GB in the B1 and 1x8gb in the B2. is this correct? also with this memory configuration in BIOS we should use option OPtimizer correct?

Thanks
