Poweredge 1800 upgrade HW to support VT?
Hi All,
I would like to start using a hypervisor like ESX on my PE1800 (tower) server. Unfortunately I don't think there are any processor upgrades available for the PE1800 to support Intel virtualisation (VT). Would it be possible to change the mainboard for one that does support a processor able of using VT? If yes which mainboard would fit and be compatible with the PE1800?
Thanks!
Best Regards,
Sander.

OEM server manufacturers like Dell, HP, IBM, etc, tend to design their own servers and their chassis. The motherboards are made exactly for 1 chassis.
Your only choice will be to upgrade to a (complete) PowerEdge 1900 (1 generation up from the 1800) or later.

Thanks for your reply. You mean by upgrade is to find a 2nd hand PE 1900? Of do you mean using the mainboard and other internals from a PE1900 and build it over to the PE1800?
Thanks again!

The 1800 chassis can only hold the 1800 motherboard.
So you'll need to buy a whole 1900/2900 or one of the newer T-series systems. You can check www.dell.com/outlet for refurb units to see if you can save some money there.

Dell outlet seems like a decent option but do they ship to Europe?!? Does anyone know? Can't find that on the site. Thanks!

Dell US won't ship to Europe (except maybe US military bases). You'll have to look for a Dell outlet site in the Dell site section for your country.
