Poweredge 4600 with external RD1000 disk backup

I have a Poweredge 4600 with the external USB connected RD1000. Unfortunately, it is so slow it is changing my backup schedule.

I tried to add a Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card, but it did not work. After reading some forum entries it appears USB 2.0 cards will not work on many older Poweredge servers. It sounds like it may be a PERC 3 (I have a PERC 3/Di) conflict issue.

My question is, what choices do I have to make this faster? Buying the internal SATA RD1000 is not enticing, since I would have to buy a PCI SATA card.

The RD1000 is plugging away at 950KB/s. Isn't this a little slow? Isn't USB 1.1 12Mbps? The DLT tape drive failed, we now have this RD1000 and I need to make it work (faster!). Does anyone else have an external RD1000 on an older Poweredge?

Any help is appreciated.

Paul

Paul,

We have same / similar setup. Did you have any luck speeding up the RD1000 on Poweredge?

Fortunately for us, we have a relatively small amout of data but RD is still slower than DLT Tape. We use Veritas Backup Exec Software which has served us well however, our Tape Drive  (used between 4-8 hours every day for about 2.5 years) just went offline for a second time during the 5+ year life of the server. The DLT was replaced about 2.5 years ago after not ejecting a tape. This time, it seems like a controller issue because the CD drive went offline as well. We are now looking to update servers and get DLT functional so we can read our old backup tapes.

Maybe we can be of help to each other. Is your Poweredge still functional?
