Poweredge R710 has 12GB of RAM , want to add 4 GB more
Hello All
I have a poweredge R710 server with 12 GB of RAM.
The 12 GB of RAM is at:
A1, A2, A3 & B1, B2, B3.
All are 2GB dimms
I got another two of 2GB of RAM. Where do i add them? to A4 & B4?
thx in advance

DDR3 has 2 types of ECC memory; Registered and Unbuffered. The server supports both, but not simultaneously.
So, you need to verify that all your memory is either UDIMM or RDIMM, but not a mix (e.g. 6 RDIMMs and 2 UDIMMs).
Assuming you have confirmed that all 8 DIMMs are identical, you'll need to move memory around a bit.
A1, A2, A4 and A5 for CPU1
B1, B2, B4 and B5 for CPU2

If your original memory are UDIMMs, that would definitely be the reason.

Hello Again
The 2 new DIMM memories of 2 GB each are:
- SAMSUNG DDR3- 1333 ECC
and at the server i have 6 DIMMS at the slots mentioned above but are ELPIDA DDR3 - 1066 ECC.
Can i put them?
thx

You could put the new memory in by itself just to verify that the chips are indeed working, but as stated above, Registered and Unbuffered don't play well together.
To be honest, I'm a little suprised the server even supports Unbuffered/Unregistered.

With the Xeon 55 and 56 series processors, the memory controller is in the processor (first Intel Xeon processor range to do this). The processor supports both unbuffered and registered ECC.
Unbuffered memory used to be maxed at 2GB, but it seems that manufacturers now also offer 4GB UDIMMs. Dell's documentation only mentions support for up to 2GB UDIMMs, but they may also support 4GB UDIMMs, just not officially (and no support for it if you cannot get it to work).
