Processor Upgrades to PowerEdge C8220: Does System Board V1.0 (CN0W6W6G) support Xeon E5-2600V2?
Our PowerEdge C8220 servers currently use 8-core Xeon E5-2600 CPUs. Is it possible to upgrade them to Xeon E5-2697V2 12-core processors?
Thank you,
J.J.

PDX1JTJ,
The W6W6G motherboard is actual the V2 version for that cloud. The E5-2697V2 processors are supported on that motherboard. I would make sure that the system is up to date before the upgrade.
Let me know if this helps.

Hello Chris,
Given what the Dell online support for PowerEdge C8220 and you have reported, the upgrade from 8-core Xeon E5-2680 to the 12-core Xeon E5-2697 should work.
Unfortunately, in the systems we upgraded, they all fail to boot or even POST. When the 8-core Xeons are reinstalled, they systems usually recover, but in one instance we had to remove the BIOS and BMC chips and use a flash programmer to restore them and the system.
Also, the C8220 Hardware Owner's Manual (p225) contains the following passage that implies that our V1.0 system boards are not compatible with the 12-core Xeon.
System Board Types
The following table lists the different types of system boards, including mode numbers, supported in the sled.
System Board System Board Model Number
V1.0 CN0W6W6G (for sled with Intel Xeon E5-2600 series processor)
V1.1 CN0TND55 (for sled with Intel Xeon E5-2600 series processor)
V1.2 CN09N44V (for sled with Intel Xeon E5-2600V2 series processor)
NOTE: For information about identifying the sled’s system board model number, see "Identifying System Board Model Number" on page 221.

PDX1JTJ,
After delving into this I have confirmed that the W6W6G motherboard is indeed the primary motherboard for the server and the 9N44V is the board needed. My list was showing the W6W6G board as the second revision and the 9N44V as the original, so I had that corrected. I apologize about that.
