Processor question for a PE 2900

Hello,

I own a Dell Power Edge 2900. I love it, its a great server. I am looking to upgrade the processors. Currently I have two 2.0 GHz core 2 duos installed. I am wondering if there is a approved processor list or something where I can search for a faster and more powerful core 2 quad to install in it. I attempted to purchase a matched pair, and I am unable to post with them installed. I switched the new ones out for the old ones.

I am running Bios version 2.7.0, its the latest available for download.

My Service tag is [ADMIN NOTE: Service Tag removed per privacy policy]

I can get more specific if more information is needed. Thanks for your time!

Which processor pair did you purchase/try?

PE2900 supports up to 5100.

PE2900 II supports  up to 5300.

PE2900 III supports up to 5400.

From the system configuration of your Service Tag, yours looks to be a 2900 II.

In the upper-left corner of the chassis, there is usually a II or III to correspond to the version (I will obviously be blank).  You can also confirm in the OS using OMSA under System, Main System Chassis, Information.

I believe the letters are used to group processors together based on power requirements.  In general, the letters will not make a difference, although the specs (cache, FSB, etc. can play a role).

I purchased two e5472 SLANR 3.00GHz/12m/16000

Is there a distiguishing feature that lets me know what version of the PE2900 I have?

I guess if the Processors that are in it are 5200, it has to be the II version since the e5400 will not work

The order details for your Service Tag showed "v2".

Thanks for the info.

One more question.. When I was looking up replacement processors, I noticed that a lot of them have a letter like x5350... How do I know what to get?

Thanks for all the help Flash!
