R410 w/ software RAID always boots to Grub shell after Linux install
Hi,
I have an R410 with a SAS6IR (no dedicated raid card), 4x3TB drives, and it came preinstalled with Windows. I am trying to install Ubuntu 18.04 with a software RAID10 root, and I'm using and unraided ext2 /boot and an EFI partition. I have installed Ubuntu, Debian and CentOS dozens of times, and each time I get sent to a grub shell (not rescue). I have tried the following techniques:
- enabling/disabling the SAS Controller via the SAS Configuration Utility
- ATA mode set to AHCI and ATA
- Manually reinstalling Grub via rescue disk
Every time I get a Grub shell. I type 'ls' and it returns:
(hd0) (hd1) (hd2) (hd3) (cd0)
and when I type 'ls (hd0)' it returns:
Error: Filesystem is unknown.
I am at a loss for words and I'm losing my mind. I've returned one server thinking it was a hardware issue and spent over 30 hours trying to get this working. I have been using Linux for nearly a decade, and I want to cry. Any advice is appreciated.
Jake

Hi,
There is an issue with nested RAID in Ubuntu which might make things difficult to install your OS.
Had you checked that SAS6iR BIOS, that the card was able to detect all drives? Though, SAS6iR definately won't be able to support RAID10, as per your request.
Have you previously install OS on PowerEdge?

Appreciate the reply, but I just bit the bullet and installed Ubuntu on a flash drive and use fstab to mount partitions of the assembled RAID on different parts of the filesystem.
