R710 Memory Upgrade possibility with 16GB module
Hi, I need help to upgrade with 16GB module for my R710
My R710 is already populated with 32GB memory module of config (G484D) -- DUAL IN-LINE MEMORY MODULE..., 4G, 1066, 2RX4X72, 8, 240, REGULATORY
can I upgrade it with (A5008568) -- 16GB 2Rx4 RDIMM ECC 1333MHz LV in below configuration in Optimizer mode??? pls. suggest.
In this way with this 16GB modules if I intermix with previous 4GB 1066mhz module my total accumulated memory perfomance would go down 1066mhz? logically which is not suggested

That should work with the 4GB DIMMs in 7/8. I edited a couple of my posts to clarify some limitations with the quad rank DIMMs, and the 1.35v CPU. I added two notes clarifying that the quad rank DIMMs will operate at 800 MHz when populated 2 per channel, and that the 1066 MHz speed limitation for the 1.35v CPU applies to dual rank or higher DIMMs when populated with a minimum of 2 per channel. In the context of our conversation I don't think it confused you, but I wanted to clarify the information for future readers.
Let us know if there are any issues with the upgrade.
Thanks

What that means is that you can put different size memory in each bank(The banks being 1-3, 4-6,7-9), but they must be populated the same way. So, you can't have 3 DIMMs in the first bank(1-3), 2 DIMMs in the second bank(4-6), and 1 DIMM in the third(7-9). Each bank must have the same number of DIMMs, so if you put 2 DIMMs in 1-3 then all of the other banks must have 2 DIMMs or no DIMMs at all.
Thanks

32GB modules aren't supported.

You will want to update the bios beforehand, but 16GB RDIMMs are supported with the newer BIOSes.

Hello utpal1
Yes, BIOS revision 1.1.4 added support for 16GB DIMMs and 1333 MHz functionality with two channels populated. If you have the 1.5v CPU then you will be able to achieve the 1333 speed in this configuration. If you have the 1.35v CPU then they will be downclocked to 1066 MHz.
Correct, all DIMMs will operate at the lowest common frequency. You could populate slots 7,8 with the 4GB DIMMs if you want.
Thanks

Hi Dev thanks.
Daniel thanks for pointing it out in details. I have already checked the BIOS reales and fix for 16GB support previously but was going through processor spec for support as you pointed out, found my Server processor is Intel(R) Quad Core E5520 Xeon(R) CPU, 2.26GHz, 8M Cache, 5.86 GT/s QPI, Turbo.
ark.intel.com/.../Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5520-8M-Cache-2_26-GHz-5_86-GTs-Intel-QPI
in processor spec voltage was menioned as: VID Voltage Range:: 0.75V -1.35V
does it mean my 16GB 1333mhz memory module will perform in downclocked 1066mhz speed??
even my concern would be....under supported memory specification type in this same processor spec..it shows
Memory Types:: DDR3 1066/800
does it mean DDR3 1333mhz module is not supported at all?
do we have 16GB DDR3 1066mhz module for R710?
sorry for so many questions...cannot resists myself to avoid dark sides.
thanks.

Correct, the max memory speed with that CPU is 1066.(Note: This applies to dual rank or higher DIMMs when 2 or more DIMMs per channel are populated)
No, it will automatically down-clock, so you can install 1333 memory and it will function normally at 1066 speed. Here is a quote from internal documentation regarding the memory down-clocking:

Hi Daniel, thanks for supporting so specifically.
Dont we have 16GB 1066mhz supported module for R710? because it doesnt make any sense investing additional money on highier speed of 1333mhz of memory when my processor will make it perform in lower speed 1066mhz. even I will be able to use my existing 4GB module too.
Thanks.

Hi,
I dont see diferrence between this two part..
A5008568 229.99 16GB 1333MHz Dual Ranked Low Volt RDIMM
A5184178 229.99 16GB 1333MHz Dual Ranked Low Volt RDIMM
Thanks for all your help. I would propose to upgrade all R710 with (A5008568) -- 16GB 2Rx4 RDIMM ECC 1333MHz LV..........I certainly hope this will work well with my server having E5520 processors and would also work with existing (G484D) -MEMORY MODULE..4G, 1066, 2RX4X72
Thanks.

Yes, but I don't see a price difference between the speeds. The 1066 DIMM is a quad rank DIMM. I don't see a reason why anyone would purchase it. Quad rank DIMMs are limited to a maximum of 2 per channel, and quad ranks are limited to a maximum of 1066MHz. Here are all of the DIMMs I show currently available for the R710:
A5008568 229.99 16GB 1333MHz Dual Ranked Low Volt RDIMM
A5184178 229.99 16GB 1333MHz Dual Ranked Low Volt RDIMM
A5095849 229.99 16GB 1066MHz Quad Ranked Low Volt RDIMM
Thanks

Thanks Daniel, my all doubts are clear now...except this last one...
This Servers already had 32GB mem..with 8pcs of (G484D) -MEMORY MODULE..4G, 1066, 2RX4X72
You said along with 16GB modules, I can also use this 4GB 1066 module at both bank A and B at 7th, 8th slot...but I was going through User guide which says...All the channels in all Bank must be populated with same size and config of memory. have I missed anything in the guide..
thanks.

I was eagerly waiting for your response..thanks.
Let me tell you, this is my first post in this Forum and the best experience ever I had.
Thanks.
