R710 PSU requirements
Hello,
I recently tried to upgrade an R710 server from a single E5520 CPU and 2x2GB of RAM to Dual X5650's and 6x8GB of RAM. The server also has a Perc 6i and 3x146GB drives. However when I did the upgrade there were warning like this;
"Alert! Power required exceeds PSU wattage. Check PSU and system configuration."
The server boots after a restart and warning about possible degradation in performance. The server only has a single 570W PSU. I'm looking for the cheapest way to resolve the issue. Would adding a secondary 570W PSU work? Or do I have to go with the high output 870W unit?
Also, I'm a big surprised by the error. The X5650 is a 95W CPU just like a lot of the others. The manuals for both the 570W and 870W PSU seem outdated as they both only mention the "maximum" configuration to be Dual 5500 model Xeon (no mention of 5600 model). But the "maximum" configuration for the 570W PSU referenced Dual 5500 Xeon processors that are 95W just like the ones I have. So to me it makes no sense why it shouldn't work.

No, adding a second 570W PSU would have no effect. We added a feature called Extended Power Range starting with 12th generation servers that allows PSU oversubscription. It will allow up to 20% of a secondary PSU to be used to exceed the maximum wattage of the main PSU. This is not a feature of any earlier generation servers.
You can either reduce your configuration or replace the 570w PSU with an 870w.

I'm a bit disappointed honestly. I looked all over the place for information about if the higher output PSU was required but found nothing. So what processors, or specification, require the 870W PSU then?
I mean, the X5650 is a 95W CPU. HERE is the PDF I found for the 570W PSU. It clearly states that the maximum CPU supported is dual 5570 and a bunch more (way less then what I have). The 5570 is a 95W CPU and is actually a 45nm chip (HERE). If anything dual 5570's should be LESS efficient then dual 5650's, which is also 95W and is a 32nm chip (HERE). So it just seems stupid to require an 870W PSU for this configuration.
So in conclusion, if dual X5570's can fit into the power requirements of a 570W PSU, I don't see why dual X5650's shouldn't. I literally don't see how it can exceed power requirements.

There is no specific CPU or component that requires the 870W PSUs. Since the systems are customizable you will have to plan your configuration and power requirements to determine which PSU you need. You can use one of our planning tools to help determine power requirements:

You mean to say I can have dual 130W CPUs on the R710 with the 570W PSUs?

Dell, can we have a clear answer to this please? There is nowhere that clearly states which PSU is required for which CPU in an R710.
I want to upgrade my single X5550 with an X5675 using 2x 570W PSUs. Will this work?

Like Daniel said earlier - Every Server you purchase from Dell is customized to your specifications. There is no such requirement regarding CPU's and which PSU's to use, because it would also depend on everything else installed, therefore your question cannot be answered in the manner you would like.
