R740 and 7920 rack mounting with skipping gap
Hello everyone.
My company is engaged in automation and we have one punch about rack mounting. We have three R740 servers and four 7920. They were mounted without gap in Server Cabinet. Server cabinet consist of Rittal cabinet TS8, two roof-mounted fans 873m3/h and 8 outlet filters (4 for each side). Our customer belives that servers should be mounted with gap, as they can overheat. I didn't find this information in installation guide and another documents. Can you officialy approve that we can mount this servers skipping gap?

The servers can be safely mounted in a rack without a gap. Most all of the systems in our lab DC are mounted without gaps, to include these models. I've never seen any documentation indicating a gap is either required or not.
That having been said, I can't comment on your specific application and server room situation. If they are overheating, then a gap may help get rid of radiant heat from the chassis.

No gap is necessary. Rackmount servers are designed to protect/dissipate the heat and vibration. If they want them mounted with a space for aesthetics, there's nothing wrong with that, I suppose - or even to let him be "right" - but they can be mounted one on top of the other. As Dylan pointed out, if the server room is not well cooled and the rack well-ventilated (front and back), then overheating may occur but not because of the proximity of the chassis.

... AND if you wanted extra ammo to back up your position that they "should" stack one on top of the other, they actually make "blanks" (covers) for empty/unused space in the rack to ensure proper airflow (front to back) through the server/server room.
