R740XL - H330 Mini - Correct SAS Cable
We are installing the H330 Mini on the R740XL PowerEdge Server. What SAS Cable is required? Can the same SAS cable from the R730XL be used? I have part# 0F037K, but if the R740XL now have a different SAS Cable please advise.
Thanks!

Hello
I doubt it would work. The cables used on the R740 for the mini-PERC are not the same cables we used on the R730.
The cables are different lengths depending on which backplane you are using. Which backplane do you have?
Thanks

Here's the base Chassis with the Dell part#'s. We're using the 8 x 2.5" SAS/SATA backplane.
210-ALUJ - OEM PowerEdge R740 XL Server
329-BDLS - OEM PowerEdge R740 XL/R740xd XL Motherboard
461-AADZ - No Trusted Platform Module
321-BCSM - Chassis with up to 8 x 2.5" SAS/SATA Hard Drives for 2CPU Configuration

Either of these parts should work: XPMRF, N7HT1
Thanks

Thanks Daniel. Do you have a drawing or some type of datasheet you can send? I would assume these are around 20" long? Would this be the same for the R640 1U Server?
Thanks!

No, I don't have any documents, pictures, or specifications available on the cables.
The cables are only used on the R740. They are not used on any other server or any other variant like the R740XD. The mini connector should work on all of our PERC9 mini controllers, and the mini-SAS connectors to the backplane are all the same. The only difference between the cables used in other 14g servers using a mini PERC and backplane should be cable length and the number of SAS connectors on the cable, so it may work on other systems.
Thanks

Now that we have the H330 mini installed in the R740XL and the SAS Cable installed with the new SAS Cable - XPMRF the H330 Mini is not being seen by the BIOS (does not show up).
We have confirmed theH330 Mini is working fine and the cable is as well. What could be causing the H330 Mini not to to be seen by the hardware? Is there any special jumpers or firmware that needs to be used to allow the H330 Mini to be seen?
Thanks!

I'm not aware of a firmware, BIOS, or any other requirement for the H330 mini to function in an R740. I have seen no documentation that states there is a firmware requirement for the PERC to function in an OEM XL R740, but the only version of the firmware I see listed as compatible with that system is:
www.dell.com/support/home/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=03NXN
There is new firmware that was just released for the H330. One of the issues it corrects is a problem with the H330 not being detected on warm reboots. The OEM XL R740 is not in the compatible system list though.
www.dell.com/support/home/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=R98MW
I would suggest making sure you have the correct H330, and make sure it is installed properly. You can review the manual for installation instructions. If you provide the part number of the H330 I can make sure it is a mini monolithic and not the mini blade version.

Thanks for the feedback.
I see in the Dell configurator for the R740XL if you choose a 1CPU chassis the H330 Mini does show up within the configurator. When you select a 2 CPU chassis the H330 Mini does not show up.
Here's the H330 Mini Part# we're using and it is installed correct. This is installed in the same fashion as the R730XL.
