R810 unsupported DIMM
Purchased Dell certified 16GB kingston RAM to upgrade server to VM, originally on BIOS 1.2.0, server was able to read all installed memory, but could not install ESXI 6.0. Upgraded BIOS to 2.9, server will no longer recognise the 16 GB RAM modules.
Removed the 16GB Dell Certified RAM, and reinstalled the 1GB sticks, and server will read this memory.
Any idea on what changed with the upgraded BIOS that will no longer read this memory.
Info from DellCaresPro on Twitter suggests downgrading the BIOS, but any other suggestions would be appreciated

Hi,
I am not seeing a twitter interaction with us, do you have a link? What happens after the update? Does it see less memory?

The 16GB modules were being recognized and supported prior to updating the BIOS We did replace them in pairs - 16GB in A1 A2, A3 A4, and B1 B2 When you say 4 or 8 are you meaning 4GB or 8GB DIMMS, or quantity of 4 or 8

I mean a quantity of 4 or 8. In BIOS 2.1 the supported memory configurations was updated. That may have made the configuration not work. Page 102 http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-r810_owner%27s%20manual_en-us.pdf

Hi, here is the twitter link. Probably because my twitter account is under my personal account rather then my work account.

After the BIOS update, rather then seeing the 108GB of installed memory, it was only seeing 12 GB, which was the additional 1GB sticks we had installed. I haven't had a chance to downgrade the BIOS, but will be doing that on Tuesday, if my coworker doesn't get it done sooner.

The memory needs to be installed in matching pairs, so DIMMs need to be 4 or 8.

When we remove the 1GB modules, the server will not go past post. The error we get is unsupported DIMMS

If you take out the 1GB modules do the new modules work?

I am back to working on the server. I have rolled the server BIOS back to version 1.2.0 at this version, it recognizes the 16GB RAM modules. However, the ESXI 6.0 will not work using this BIOS. I have installed the 16GB modules in A1, A2, A3, A4 The system is reading 96GB of RAM, even though the memory configuration is not optimal.
I had tried BIOS 2.5.0, 2.7.0, 2.7.4 and 2.9.0 all of which will not read the 16 GB RAM modules. They can read the 1GB RAM modules fine.

Hello,
What is the frequency of 16 GB RAM module you are using? I have R810 with E7540 2 CPU, i have tried to upgrade my server to 256 GB DIMM's 16 GB each but it was throwing error message like " system halted " " memory can not detected". My BIOS version is 2.9.
As you said, once we degrade BIOS version it does support to 16 GB DIMM's. Moreover its depend's on what CPU we are using in it. could you please let me know what Processor's you are using in R810?
Please check this link where it says R810 does not support to 16 GB DIMM's.
Your feedback would be really appreciated !!
Regards,
Rahul
