SC430 Memory Upgrade

Hello to all. I'm trying to upgrade my Poweredge SC430 server's memory to 4 gigs. After searching around on the net and Dell's website, they suggest to upgrade to PC-5300 @ 667MHz even though the original memory installed is PC-4200 @ 533MHz. At least that's the first thing that comes up after I put in my Service Tag number. So I went out and got 4 1gig stics of Kingston Value Ram model KVR667D2N5/1G.

BIOS system setup shows all 4 in place with a total of 4 gigs of RAM with correct speed and the rest, but after I exit BIOS to continue to boot into the OS I get the "System Halted! Memory type or speed is not supported." error.

Does that mean that SC430 server does not support that memory speed, or are there some settings or jumpers on the mother board that have to be setup in order for the system to use that memory? I've updated BIOS to the latest version 4, but that didn't help.

Has anyone seen this error and knows what's possible solution here? And if this memory is not supported, why whould it come up as an upgrade option on Dell's website?

Thank you in advace for your help.

This is an unbuffered Non-ECC memory. I believe ECC or Non-ECC should be supported on SC430 as long as they are not mixed, and my aren't.

Is the memory unbufferred ECC memory?

I just got a SC440 and tried to upgrade. Crucial memory says that you can use non-ECC but I'm not sure. I tried adding two matched 512MB non-ecc memory and it didn't work. I went to Dell support and they say that the specs only allow ecc memory, which is a pain. I've got tons of non-ecc memory lying around. Anyway, if someone gets a definitive answer, let me know.
Thanks,
Al

The 430 and 440 only support EEC memory.

Yes, that's what I figured. Crucial is usually pretty good on this but they should probably update their documentation. Thanks, Al

Thanks for your replies guys. I kinda figured it out too that PowerEdge doesn't support the non-ecc memory. Had to look up the parts that Dell suggests on their website as an upgrade option and they all coming up as ECC type memory. Found this Kingston stick that should work for sure: KVR533D2E4/1GI

For the SC440 this memory has to go in pairs. If it's the same for the SC430 you'd need two of these. I'd like to find some 512MB sticks. Al

I just found the KVR533D2E4/512 for $14 plus $6 shipping at Memory Unlimited. The KVR533D2E4/1G is $25.59. http://www.memoryunlimited.com/kvr533d2e4-1g.html
